Come Walk With Me!

I went over to my grandfathers house and saw that he had some Aspen limbs that he planned to make into walking staffs (He is a great carver and he has taught me a lot).


Well when I got home, I did not know what to carve but I knew that I would come up with something. I was going through one of my books and I then made up my mind...

I would draw and then burn in animal names, tracks and sizes of North America.

I started with a duck then a goose then a deer, elk, moose, ect...

At the bottom of the walking staff, I measured and burned inches into the wood. This is for measuring tracks and other things as needed.

Well I did not want to leave the kids out and they too wanted a walking stick. So, I cut one of the limbs in haft and started to draw.

K-girls was the easy one. I just thought vines, leaves and butterflies. I drew it on and burned it in.



A-boy's was a little harder, but the dinosaurs looked good and A-boy loved it.

Go Fish!

I was going through the Internet and checking out web sights over survival tools and came upon a fishing spear. I knew I had to try this and I do like wood carving. It did not look to hard and I had the wood in the back so why not give it a try. Four hours later, it was completed.

What I like about this is that all you need is a pocket knife and sand paper. (That is if you have that)



As you are thinning the end, start making the notches so you don't run out of wood. The cut is to be made at a inward angle. Then start shaving towards the cut.





The last thing to do is make a sharp point.

STARTING OFF SMALL

I found this book (The Original Boy's Handy Book By Daniel Beard) that was on sale for $5.00 at the book store. I wanted to have skills that I could pass on to me children. So, I bought the book and brought it home to show my wife. She shook her head and laughed at me. She knows that I don't have these type of skills.
A year went by, no project. I got motivated one day and opened the book and found a project that I said "I can do that." The wife still laughed at me.
The chapter is called Home-Made Fishing Tackle (Nets)

Step 1: Find the right tree branch or sapling that has a strong "Y" to it.

Step 2: Bend the two branches until the ends over-lap each other.

Step 3: Bind them with rope, bark (if it can), weeds.

Step 4: Cutting rope for the net ( 2 feet long of net = 7 to 8 feet of string)

Step 5: Tie the string on to the branch about a inch apart from each other.

Step 6: Start going back and forth tying the rope into the net.

Step 7: Bring the bottom together and tie the ends.
